Should I use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA?

Yes. This is the easiest way to get your Tax Information onto the FAFSA and greatly reduces the likelihood of your FAFSA being selected for verification. Most tax filers, but not all, are able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA. If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool , then you will need to provide us with a signed copy of your IRS form 1040 taxes or request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. This will make the process of awarding your financial aid take longer.

In some instances, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will not work. These instances include: A tax return has been filed as “Married Filing Separately”; A tax return status is married and filed as Head of Household; Marital status changed after December 31st; An amended tax return has been filed; A Puerto Rican or foreign tax return has been filed; You currently owe taxes and have not paid the IRS in full. If the IRS Data Retrieval Tool does not work for you you will need to provide us with a signed copy of your IRS Form 1040 taxes or get a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. This will make the process of awarding your financial aid take longer.
